Business Events Industry Aotearoa (BEIA) has long championed an amendment to Section 20 of the Medicines Act 1981. This section of the Act inadvertently prevented medical companies from promoting their products at medical conference trade shows unless they were Medsafe approved.
BEIA are pleased to announce that, in November, the final stages of legislation were passed to amend the Act. This amendment now allows the promotion of non-approved medical products at medical conferences in New Zealand. As a result, New Zealand can now actively engage with medical associations that previously excluded us due to this restriction.
Conference organisers must notify the Director-General of Health about any unapproved medical products being promoted at upcoming conferences at least 30 working days before the event. To complete the exemption form, please click here.
