Inside Te Haeata: Jorja Robertson's Learner Experience

As a new generation of professionals enters the business events industry, Te Haeata is supporting learners to build confidence, capability and clear career pathways.

Te Haeata, meaning “the beam of light,” was developed through a collaborative effort involving industry leaders, ServiceIQ, Grow Tourism, and NZQA. The programme is specifically designed for those working in the Business Events sector, offering the New Zealand Certificate in Business Events (Level 4).

Participants will benefit from a blend of practical, on-the-job training and accessible online learning, equipping them with both hands-on experience and essential theoretical knowledge. Not only does it support individual development, but it also contributes to building a robust, capable, and internationally respected Business Events workforce.

Jorja Robertson, Administrator at Business Events Wellington, shares her experience of the programme as she begins her professional journey in the sector.

Jorja, tell us about your role at Business Events Wellington.

I am the Administrator at Business Events Wellington. After completing a Bachelor of Commerce in November 2025, I am now starting my professional career in the business events industry!

Why did you choose to do Te Haeata?

I chose to do Te Haeata to broaden my understanding of the industry as I am still new to the sector. This will help me perform better in my current role and prepare me for future opportunities.

How are you finding the online learning platform?

I am really enjoying the online learning platform. It’s great having familiar, well‑known, and respected tutors guiding the programme, as it feels reassuring to learn from people with strong industry knowledge. I also appreciate how clearly everything is explained, with terms broken down in an easy‑to‑understand way.

How are you managing your study time within your job role?

I haven’t had any issues balancing work and study. The programme is flexible and self‑paced, which makes it easy to manage my time and work through the content gradually.

Have you felt supported in this journey so far?

Yes, I have felt supported. The Service IQ team clearly explained how the programme works and what to expect from the beginning. They have also checked in regularly, and the ongoing catch‑ups give me peace of mind knowing support is available if I need it.

What do you hope to gain from completing Te Haeata?

I hope to gain a deeper understanding of the industry and feel more confident in what I am doing in my role. I also hope to gain a clearer understanding of potential career pathways and progression within the industry and feel more ready to take on additional responsibility in my role.
